Questions parents ask
What is the UK under-16 social media ban?
The Government has announced that from spring 2027, apps such as TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and X must stop under-16s having accounts. Messaging apps like WhatsApp are not covered. The guide explains what’s known and what’s still being decided.
What age can my child use WhatsApp?
The minimum age for WhatsApp in the UK is 13.
Can I see my child’s messages?
Not through the apps’ parental tools. Family Centre, Family Pairing and Instagram supervision show who your child is in contact with and let you set limits, but not what they say. The guide explains what each tool can and can’t do.
